Packing for autumn: build layers around your day

An autumn day can call for several changes of temperature without calling for several complete outfits. A few compatible layers make it easier to adapt while keeping the family luggage manageable.

Start with the day

Write down the outdoor parts of your day, travel time and evening plans. A morning walk and a heated museum may need different combinations. Check the forecast again before leaving and choose outerwear for the activities you actually expect.

Try the layers together

Before packing, check that the jumper fits comfortably under the jacket. Let children try the full outfit with their travel shoes. Items that work individually can feel tight or awkward when worn together, especially around cuffs and collars.

Leave room for removed layers

Your day bag needs space for the jumpers everyone removes later. Keep dry spares in a separate pouch, and separate damp outerwear from clean clothes. At the accommodation, take wet pieces out so you can see what is available tomorrow.

A short packing check

  • Base clothing, a middle layer and activity-appropriate outerwear.
  • Dry socks and room for layers taken off during the day.

Frequently asked questions

Does every day need its own jumper?

Plan around use and drying options. A clean, dry middle layer can work with more than one outfit.
