Family packing routines: save your own rules for the next trip
Some things come on every trip. Others need to increase with the number of days you are away. Collect these separately once, and the next packing list can start with the routines that already work for your family.
Separate the things you always need
A favourite bedtime toy, glasses and a toothbrush usually matter on both a short break and a longer holiday. Save these under the traveller who needs them, together with the right quantity.
Use specific names. “Sam’s bedtime bear” is clearer than “toys”. A precise item is easier to recognise when you check whether it has actually been packed.
Work out daily quantities separately
Set a daily quantity for things you use up each day. If your family normally allows for six nappies a day, for example, the base quantity for a two-day trip is twelve. Think separately about any spares you need for the journey.
Review daily quantities from time to time. Children’s routines, laundry options and family needs change; old numbers may not fit every new trip.
Make it clear who is packing what
With a shared list, it is easy to assume someone else has taken care of an item. Divide the jobs before leaving: who will check the documents, who will pack the clothes and who will bring the shared equipment?
Agree on what a tick means: the item is already in the bag. If it still needs buying or preparing, leave it open.
Improve the routine when you get home
Three questions are enough: what was missing, what ran out and what stayed in the bag throughout? Use the answers to update your own rules.
Separate lasting lessons from the circumstances of one trip. Swimwear left unused on a rainy weekend could still be useful on your next holiday.
How Packing What helps
In the app, you can add personal rules for each traveller and shared items for the trip. Daily quantities follow the number of travel days you enter, while always-needed items use your own saved settings.
AI can suggest extra items based on the trip, while your own required rules take priority. Review the generated list, add anything specific to your plans and start checking things off.
Frequently asked questions
Should I save rules for each traveller separately?
It helps to attach personal belongings to the person who needs them. Keep shared equipment separate so that the same item does not appear under every family member.
Does a saved list replace a final check?
A list helps you organise packing. Check the weather, activities and accommodation facilities again for every trip.
