Train travel with children: pack for the transfer too

On a train trip, fitting everything into a suitcase is only part of the task. You also need to move it along platforms and through transfers while looking after the children. Plan for those moments before filling the bags.

Count separate pieces

Suitcase, backpack, toy bag and coats soon add up. Assign each item to an adult and rehearse carrying the whole load at home. If an extra piece requires an extra hand, combine it with another bag or reconsider whether it needs to come.

Keep the seat-side bag small

Put journey reading, food, drinks and cleanup items into one accessible bag. Keep a spare outfit in a pouch there too. Once seated, you can settle in without opening the full clothing case or repeatedly moving the larger luggage.

Plan the last part of the journey

Consider the walk or onward journey from the station, and leave room for removed layers. Check current operator information for your train and luggage arrangements. Build your packing plan around the actual journey, including the part after you leave the train.

A short packing check

  • A designated carrier for each bag and one journey bag.
  • Reading, personal journey essentials and an accessible clothing change.

Frequently asked questions

Should a child carry a backpack?

A few light belongings can work if they carry it comfortably. Allow for an adult carrying it later.
